Daniil Medvedev completed Novak Djokovic’s career in the first year of the Grand Slam in men’s tennis since 1969
Novak Djokovic’s hopes of a Grand Slam calendar and 21-year-old Daniil Medvedev did well to win the No. 1 World Cup final at the US Open.
Djokovic aspired to be the third person after Don Budge (1938) and Rod Laver (1962 and 1969) to hold all four titles in the same year.
In addition to the weight of history on his shoulders, the victory also saw him step away from his major rivals Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal and become the first person to win a single 21 Slam title.
But Medvedev ended his career and career with a third-place finish in the Grand Slam, a 6-4 6-4 6-4 victory to actually fight the youngsters against the old guards.
Medvedev said: “First of all I would like to apologize to you fans and Novak because we all know what he is going through today and I just want to say what you have achieved this year and in all your work – I have not said this to anyone but I am saying so far, for me you are the greatest player in history.
“I want to thank my team. It’s not hard to walk to win the Slam but I am so thankful for helping me on this journey.”
Speaking to the crowd, the Russian added: “Then I want to thank you guys. Today you may have been a little extra on Novak but this makes sense. All week you have given me a lot of energy. It has helped me today. It was not easy but thank you very much.
“Finally, I want to finish my speech very nicely. It’s the third memory for me and my wife today and during this competition I can’t think of prizes or anything. When I win, the only thing I think is that if I lose I don’t have time to win prizes then I have to win this game.
Medvedev was badly beaten by Djokovic in the final of the Australian Open in February but initially showed he could not make the same mistakes, setting up a hospital and leaving only three points to serve.
Djokovic dropped the opening game from 40-15 and was unable to touch Medvedev after that. The Russian has not completely abandoned his leader to become the fifth consecutive player at the US Open to take first Djokovic.
Things were not going well according to the Serbs system whose tactics and volleyballs did not bother Medvedev in the battle for the top two crops.
Medvedev was playing his third Grand Slam game and his second this year, after being defeated by Djokovic, 34, at the Australian Open. He came into the game after leaving just one set and showing a violent tennis show along the way.
The song was not in Djokovic’s legs and he seemed to be confused, even though it was stressful, tired or a combination of both.
It didn’t take long for his frustration to subside in the fourth game of the second half. After failing to change a number of pauses, he emptied his wallet several times in court, and was warned.
Medvedev used the moment to take a 3-2 break and managed to move on to one of the Grand Slam titles.
His aggressive form seems to be showing too much for Djokovic to deal with and he was also able to fight the top seed, this time in the opening game of the third round.

Djokovic looked uneasy as Medvedev sealed the second half of his career to take a 3-0 lead. The Russian served the title but only trembled at the end to give the country the No. 1 return once.
The frustrated Djokovic covered his face with his towel and cried before stepping out of the 10th match to be assisted by a violent group and the Hollywood kings at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Medvedev made two more mistakes in his second game but on Djokovic’s third and Medvedev fell on the court to celebrate being the first man since Rafael Nadal in 2010 and the second since Ivan Lendl in 1987 to drop just one run for office in New York.
Through tears, Djokovic, who has always wanted to win has always been associated with the most grateful grace in the defeat, said: “I would like to start by thanking Daniil, an amazing match, an amazing competition.
“If there is anyone who deserves the most respect right now, you have done very well.”
Surprisingly Daniil Medvedev, you have suspended one of the best tonight. Winning your first Grand Slam title is always a special thing, to act against an expert like Novak Djokovic is another thing. Take courage Novak, the request continues. All the best, ?

Speaking to the crowd, he added: “I’m just thinking about these two events, and I see myself standing in front of you guys and saying something.
“I want to say that tonight, even though I did not win the game my heart is full of joy and I am the happiest person in life because you guys made me feel so special on the field.”
