The Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Soccer (CONCACAF) has confirmed that it is open to the idea of a World Cup that will take place once a year.
FIFA council voted to do what it could by holding men’s and women’s international cups every two years, views held by opponents, but CONCACAF has requested more discussions with participants.
In a statement released on its official website, the governing body said it was aware of the need to set a new schedule if it meant a reduction in global windows, less player movement and more competitive sports rather than more friendly games.
“We will continue to look at these ideas positively, with a relaxed attitude, and with a cohesive spirit,” CONCACAF said in a statement.
“As CONCACAF focuses on its region, we also believe in the importance of being part of the global family and listen to the views of those involved in global sports.
“We urge not only our fellow Confederations but all members of the international family to come together and work together to create FIFA calendars and competitions that are conducive to the development of the game in all regions of the world.”
Last week, the South American Soccer Confederation (CONMEBOL) rejected the request, saying it was “illegal” and could end up making a football calendar.
European football governing body UEFA has also rejected the idea, with its president Aleksander Ceferin warning that European countries could hold the World Cup if FIFA wants the event to take place.
A new study by YouGov found that nearly two-thirds of Britons refuse to host the World Cup every two years, while 40% of 1,000 fans surveyed said they strongly opposed each other and 24% ‘slightly opposed’.
Only 21 percent supported the plan, plus only eight percent.
Wenger: The current calendar is old
Arsene Wenger is conducting a thorough investigation at the request of 166 football clubs.
A change in the global calendar could mean a major end to each year, a World Cup exchange in the years even in recent years such as the European Championship and the Copa America in mysterious years.
In the meantime, FIFA wants to reduce the number of international windows to once or twice, in October and March, excluding a national team that has played more than seven games including playoffs.
Wenger said the current calendar was “obsolete, useless and useless” and said if the former club manager would jump for change.
“I tried to create a simple, easy-to-understand and modern calendar, which means a good separation between club football and the federation,” said the Frenchman.
“In honor of this 80-20%, I believe, I would have been a club I could sign with all my hands on this program.
“It would give me time to be with the players and have the necessary interest in the club. All in all I can say that a good separation between the club team and the national team can help all the teams get better.”
