Jack Cogger scored in one of three and a half attempts as Huddersfield came from behind 18-0 to beat Catalans in France
The Catalans Dragons made history by taking the League Leaders’ Shield to Perpignan but Huddersfield disrupted the party and came back in the second half to record an unbeaten 30-18 Super League victory against the Dragons.
On a festive night at Stade Gilbert Brutus, Dragons coach Steve McNamara allowed several young French players their chance to appear, Arthur Mourgue instead of Sam Tomkins in the back and Cesar Rouge instead of Michael McIlorum on the hooker.
And it was the Dragons who tried it first. 60 meters from Mathieu Laguerre and Romain Franco were converted to the left by a James Maloney kick and Matt Whitley collected to cross. Maloney’s turn made it 6-0 15 minutes later.
Three minutes later Laguerre picked up Josh Drinkwater’s kick and hit Jake Wardle to hit the ball on the line in the left corner, Maloney again on target and a turn.
Maloney then headed in the right corner as winger Tom Davies threw the ball to Whitley in his second test, Maloney adding a third turn to make it 18-0.
Huddersfield came back with a blosh blower from Josh Jones, who went to Oliver Russell came back and hit the line for Jones to hit and do well. Russell also added a turnaround to give the Giants a chance.
The Giants forced Davies to connect five yards from his line but Olly Ashall-Bott, who was completely behind, only complained, leaving the Dragons behind.
But Russell was in danger with another strike, winger Louis Senior rallied, a stabilization and the Giants’ back was right with his change to make it 18-12 just in time half the time.
Russell was at the forefront of the Giants’ first-half pressure in the second half and it took 10 minutes for Jack Cogger to cross, while Russell achieved a point with his turn.
Ashall-Bott also tried to make an instant start with an impressive 45-yard touchdown run, shooting back four fighters, with Russell again on target to put the French team ahead, putting Huddersfield ahead for the first time in the game 18-24.

The shot was hit 10 minutes from the end when prop Matty English insisted on walking between the scenes to try, giving Russell a simple shot and putting the Giants 12 points ahead, and Huddersfield managed to win.
The defeat could not dispel the stereotype that followed the final hooter as his supporters enjoyed the first Super League Cup-winning trophy in France.
Supporters and the team are now looking forward to their next game in Brutus, a semifinal that could see the Dragons take another front line with success and appearances in the Grand Final.
