Billy Horschel is said to have won once at Wentworth

Billy Horschel defended his title in the Rolex Series title after a one-shot shot at the final of the BMW PGA Race.

The Americans made a tapie birdie at the end of five to close the 65 bogey in Wentworth and ended up shooting Laurie Canter, Jamie Donaldson and Kiradech Aphibarnrat.

Christiaan Bezuidenhout ended the blows twice in the snow before Justin Rose, Andrew ‘Cow’ Johnston and night coach Francesco Laporta, while Bernd Wiesberger’s 20th-place finish proved the Austrians worthy of the European Ryder Cup team.

Lee Westwood found a level similar to the 11th Ryder Cup despite scoring 77, while Shane Lowry – who wants to finish eight – went from a position he had made to himself after finishing 71th.

The Aphibarnrat started the fourth day in the back but raised the lead board from 10 yards in the first half and sent four straight birdies from the fourth, winning four times in the Europe Tour and then destroying other chances from within eight feet on the next two holes.

Horschel made three birdies in four holes from Wednesday to move briefly near Aphibarnrat on the 15th, only for the Thai player to be able to walk a 25-foot birdie on the 11th and make a 20-foot eagle on five near eight feet around and three logical ones.

Canter had dropped the lead board after punching the first one and removing his birdie in a row and throwing a third shot, before responding with four birdies in five holes and adding another one from three to ten feet to get inside one.

Aphibarnrat rallied 15 feet to save on 15 and turned from 10 feet on 16th for another birdie, putting Alex Noren’s 62nd record in jeopardy, while Horschel still connected with a back-to-back advantage from 11th and Canter climbed 12th to keep his hopes alive.

The tournament opened when Aphibarnrat escaped with a bogey just after hitting the field 17-17 and then finishing in the final, seeing him prepare for the target at 18 under, with Horschel doing an eight birdie foot on 15 to make three ropes.

Donaldson made a quartet at the top where he followed the 17th-ranked birdie with two puttons in the fifth inning, but Horschel was the only one to pull out the pack after firing his third shot at 18 to within two feet and set up a winning birdie.

Canter had a chance to go back 19 down with the final birdie, only to keep the Englishman from missing the target from 20 feet making Horschel the second most successful American at the BMW PGA Championship in the history of the race.
