Joe Salisbury challenged his British counterpart Jamie Murray to take over the role of two US Open men along with his colleague Rajeev Ram.
Salisbury and American Ram recovered a lazy opener to beat Murray and Bruno Soares 3-6 6-2 6-2 and added to the Australian Open crown they won in 2020.
Salisbury, 29, said: “It’s my first time playing for Arthur Ashe, and this victory with Rajeev is amazing. It’s a dream come true. I have to say thank you to Rajeev, I can’t ask to be with anyone in court.”
Salisbury and Ram had looked good in the opening game when Murray and Soares – who were defenders after winning the Mate Pavic title last year – took advantage of the opportunity.
Soares Soares was showing less complications from his recent appendectomy after he fell ill on his way to the Tokyo Olympics last month.
But Salisbury and Ram confirmed this differently from the start of the second round, when they crushed Murray immediately to take over, then broke twice twice to take control.
Murray, seeking a third chance of the Grand Slam men’s race after winning twice in 2016, cut off a frustrated man when he broke into the opening game, giving his opponents what he didn’t give.
Murray said: “Obviously we lost power at the start of the second set and the game changed dramatically.
“But we are very proud of how we fought this week and how we fought to the end, and we look forward to the future.”
