Romelu Lukaku and Mateo Kovacic scored their first goals at Stamford Bridge in Chelsea as the Blues beat Aston Villa 3-0 to join Manchester United at the top of the Premier League table.
In his second appearance for the club Lukaku was medically fit to finish after Kovacic’s 15-minute shot and, after a break, the Croatian took the offense to steal Tyrone Mings (49) to achieve his first goal for the club.
Villa dominated between the two goals, forcing Edouard Mendy to create good save kicks in the first half, while Ollie Watkins was denied by Thiago Silva’s crucial touchdown pass. However, after receiving the Mings gift, those who were prepared – when they were not able to – found ways to improve and Lukaku extended his chances by driving the left foot in the main corner over time (90 + 4) to increase the amount.
Chelsea’s preliminary photo shoot made newcomer Saul Niguez adapt to the break but the Blues maintained their undefeated start until the season. Villa – who missed key men Emi Martinez and Emi Buendia due to their international tour with Argentina – have four points in the first four games.
How Chelsea turned Villa into a three-time winner …
This was a dangerous start to the game in west London, with Antonio Rudiger and Marcos Alonso seeing a shot close the corner of the corner within minutes Konsa stretched out a free kick at the end before turning the corner of Chelsea on his bar shortly afterwards.
A good moment disrupted the moment in an hour, with Kovacic making use of a midfielder Lukaku who narrowly skipped inside Axel Tuanzebe before finishing in hospital over Villa Villa Jed Steer, and found the net in his 9th Appearance at the moment with a Chelsea shirt.
Despite the problem, Villa responded positively. As Saul handed the ball over the edge of his box, Watkins forced Thiago Silva into the penalty area after hitting Mendy, the Chelsea defender before blocking the Villa player’s effort and making two unsuitable stops for Tyrone Mings and Konsa.
Saulo’s problem exacerbated the poor performance of the former Atletico Madrid striker, who, having won one of his nine games and failed to feature seven times, was replaced by Jorginho at half-time.
And Chelsea celebrated the moment when Kovacic rode the Mings’ secret pass to return to Steer to score goals and assist in the first game since January 2017, when he was at Real Madrid, breaking his Stamford Bridge duck on the 73rd try.
Kai Havertz was about to do this three minutes later when he fired home a shot and Alonso came close to scoring in the middle of the half when Konsa again tried Mendy with a header from the crossbar.
There were a lot of attempts from Watkins and Mings but Mendy faced a recurring nightmare on a night that was more busy than he expected. That solid foundation allowed Chelsea to advance to the final and ended their third win in four games in a row with Lukaku injured in a high corner.
Saul’s forgetfulness
In the first half, Saul won one of nine games, conceded three fouls, missed six passes (83.8% accuracy) and had a 58% correct score at Villa’s half. He found a place once and lost three.
Later, Thomas Tuchel told Sky Sports: “We can see that Saul had a bit of a challenge to get used to the size of the Premier League, our structure and the way we play.
“It was difficult to do so [take him off] but I had a feeling he was struggling. He had some serious flaws, and he always made mistakes. He fought hard and you can see that he has not changed. This is my absolute responsibility. I thought he would just jump in and play us at this level.
“It’s very difficult [to adapt]. I told her before, it’s my responsibility if it doesn’t work for your match. After a bit of losing the ball and making a chance for Aston Villa, I thought it would be best to replace him. “
What the supervisors said …
Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel: “It wasn’t really good. We played against a very strong, strong Aston Villa team. They were well prepared. They looked sharp and brave from the start and they brought us a lot of problems, especially in the first half.
“The second half was good. Too good, some fluid games and then a lot of chances and a half-chance we didn’t do well. We lacked the right to have the first goals but it’s good.
“Lukaku has a personality and self-confidence, he wants to score and support his team with his goals and he is anxious to do it. of a group we have never been to. “
Aston Villa boss Dean Smith: “I’m disappointed with the goals but football is only a matter of time and we didn’t take any time today. The second goal brought a lot of wind into our experiments. But there were many advantages, there is a lot of faith in the team. “
