The starting line-up for the NASCAR Cup Series on Saturday at Richmond Raceway was based on the numbers NASCAR is using for most of the 2021 Cup competitions.
The start of the Federated Auto Parts 400, the second edition of the Cup Series playoffs (7:30 pm ET; NBCSN, TSN5, MRN, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio), was based on four elements:
- Driver finish from previous race (25%)
- Car owners finish from previous race (25%)
- Groups of private groups (35 percent)
- Fastest speed in the last race (15%)
NASCAR qualifies for only eight tournaments in 36 World Cup competitions in the 2021 season. Seven of those competitions have already been contested; The remaining qualifying race is the Championship 4 race race at Phoenix Raceway in November.

Who won the NASCAR competition in Richmond?
NASCAR gave Kyle Larson 1st place on the Richmond list based on his performance. Larson is leading the field and is coming to a final last weekend in Darlington.
The winner of the race, Denny Hamiln, lined up next to Larson in the front. Hamlin closed out a place in Round 12 with his first season win in the Cook Out Southern 500.

Under NASCAR rules, the 16 highs in the Saturday field went to 16 riders, but the starting system is based on the math that NASCAR used on its many races this season.
The four drivers under the 12 cut-off lines that enter the race on Saturday all start at the back of the playoff pack. Alex Bowman 12th, William Byron 14th, Kyle Busch 15th and Michael McDowell 16th.

Next season defender Chase Elliott starts 13th after an accident forced him out of the Darlington competition. Elliott comes into the race on Saturday at 10 a.m. game.
NASCAR Cup game standings
Denny Hamlin became the first driver this year to continue for the second time when he won in Darlington. Runner-up Kyle Larson extended his lead in the playoffs and four playoff runners faced major setbacks standing on the “Too Tough to Tame” track.
