Britain’s Emma Raducanu continued to make history as she became the first to participate in the Grand Slam final, finishing last Saturday at the US Open against fellow teenager Leylah Fernandez.
The 18-year-old Kent champion defeated 17-year-old Greek seed Maria Sakkari 6-1 6-4 to establish the first-year finalists at the US Open since 1999, before she was born, 17-year-old Serena Williams beat 18-year-old Martina Hingis.
Raducanu had just been at A Levels when he reached the fourth round of Wimbledon in July, but did more than expected in his final clash with the Flushing Meadows without a set – 18 winners in a row and just 27 games in six games combined.
He further told the court: “To be honest, the time in New York has passed very quickly. I have just been taking care of it every day and after three weeks I am at the end. I don’t really believe it.
“Today I don’t care about anyone but myself. I have a moment, I want to thank my team and LTA and everyone at home for helping me.
“Ever since I’ve been here since the beginning of the quallies, I’ve been wonderfully supported.”
What about his chances at the end? “Is there any hope? I’m fit so technically nothing has forced me,” he added.
Although it was a great disappointment to Belinda Bencic, the Olympic champion at the final, going to meet the talented Sakkari had to be her toughest test under the auspices of Arthur Ashe Stadium on the first TV show in the States.
The fast-growing star, who will be ranked as Britain No. 1 next week, has taken advantage of the start from Sakkari to pass in the first three games, one of the strongest on the WTA Tour has failed to take any of its seven break breaks.
The first half turned into a nightmare for Sakkari when he twice made the mistake of putting Raducanu in full control, the possibility of having a bagel. But the Greek, who was one step away from reaching the final of the Slam in the French Open before losing to Barbora Krejcikova, played in the sixth round to climb.
However, Raducanu soon closed down to be the next 17th edition of New York and closed the place in history.
Feeling wrong Sakkari felt the heat, Raducanu took advantage of every opportunity and moved on to the third part of the second half and made a flawless one.
Sakkari secured a five-point break in the running for nine minutes in the seventh game, but Raducanu remained calm to close the gap.
And he worked for an amazing 47th season during which time he was a fan of the game to qualify until the final Saturday and his journey to immortality.
She has played for the first time in a British women’s team at Flushing Meadows since Wade in 1968.

Young Fernandez made it to the final Saturday after a stunning three-time victory over Aryna Sabalenka.
Fernandez, who turned 19 on Monday, scored a stunning 7-6 (3) 4-6 6-4 victory over country No. 2 to follow in the footsteps of fellow Canadian and 2019 Bianca Andreescu in the final round of feminism last as a teenager.
