Emma Raducanu followed in Wimbledon’s footsteps – when she reached the final 16 years as a wild card – with a 6-2 6-3 first win against Stefanie Vogele at the US Open.
An 18-year-old girl, pushing her to start lowering the Grand Slam on the other side, passed Vogele missing a chance in 79 minutes.
Raducanu is a fast-growing talent that reached the final of the WTA Challenger in Chicago last week. This run has helped him climb to No. 150 in the recent WTA series.
He saw his last opponent, Jennifer Brady, leave due to injuries.
Brady, the 13th and 2021 finalists at the Australian Open, took a knee injury meaning the young British man took the Swiss No 128 Vogele replacement.
Raducanu, who has competed in three qualifying matches, has done well with the 24 winners to get rid of something important in his young career, even though he wanted seven hot matches to hit 29
degrees in New York.
He has not stopped and is now facing China’s Zhang Shuai to secure a place on Wednesday.
“It’s amazing,” Raducanu said Amazon prime. “I think everyone can say I’m nervous about the last game, but I got to the end and I was comfortable at the end and the crowd helped me a lot and it was fun to play in front of the fans over and over here in the States.
“I’ve been playing in the court courts for a couple of weeks now so I’m used to the culture and the heat so I feel good and confident in my game so I’m happy to see how I can go.
“I’m very happy. I was initially broken in the two rounds but I managed to pull back a little bit from the middle of the opportunity, the kind of talent but I would take it and run with it and use it to my advantage.”
Fellow Brit Katie Boulter will try to follow Raducanu in the second half when she meets Ludmilla Samsonova of Russia in the afternoon.
Country No. 1 Ashleigh Barty started in search of a third Grand Slam title by beating the 2010 US Open Vera Zvonareva 6-1 7-6 (9-7).
The fourth Czech seed and the last to complete Karolina Pliskova he chased eight acres, plus one in his second game, to beat American Caty McNally 6-3 6-4.
