Former President Obama paid tribute to those who fell 9/11 and also paid tribute to the amazing Americans who risked their lives every day for the plague.
In a statement to PoliticusUSA, President Obama stated:
Today we pay tribute to the nearly 3,000 men, women and children who died on September 11, 2001, as well as to those who lost their lives in the service of our country over the past 20 years. We will reaffirm our commitment to maintain a sacred trust with their families – including children whose parents have died, and who have shown such resilience. But the event is to commemorate what we have learned in the 20 years since bad morning.
The curriculum is long and extensive. But one thing that has emerged on 9/11 – and has been on display since then – is that America has always been the home of heroes who rush to risk for good.
For Michelle and me, the constant picture of the day is not just a fall or a ruin. It was firefighters climbing the stairs while others were descending. Travelers are thinking of getting rid of the rooster, knowing that it may be the last one. Volunteers available at recruitment offices throughout the area in the coming days, eager to put their lives on the line.
Over the past 20 years, we have seen this same courage and commitment shown on many occasions. We saw it a decade ago when, after years of struggle, our army brought justice to Osama bin Laden. And we see it today – by doctors and nurses, tired of the bones, doing what they can to save lives; workers, some of whom were not born 20 years ago, are putting themselves at risk of saving Americans and helping refugees find a better life; first responders strike a roaring fire with rising water to bring families to safety. It represents what is good in America, and what can bring us together.
9/11 reminded us of how many Americans volunteer in amazing ways – not just in times of crisis, but every day. Let us not forget this, and do not take it lightly.
9/11 has been a day of international exhibition, and on this day of remembrance, we must not forget the fallen, but we can also be strengthened from their courage and strength.
