Tesla’s Self-driving Cars and Waymo Taxi: Two ways to drive a car

Last year he saw a jumping and increased accidents of car deaths, as a plague prevented many Americans from leaving the streets. The death toll per 100 million miles of traffic has grown by 24% since last year. It was a major rise in one year on record – and 2021 is about to be just as bad. At the same time, the promise of autonomous vehicles never came close. Waymo and Tesla continue to develop their potential for independence, attracting the exciting prospect of human suffering to a nearer end. But moving forward is difficult.

The idea of switching to autonomous vehicles provides a very modern idea of the problems of the old system: the well-known problem of the trolley.

Testing for this concept involves the driver of a motor vehicle while having an accident with a group of pedestrians. The driver can’t do anything and kill several people on the way or take action, changing the track so that only one person dies. Nowadays, doing everything does not mean that 1.3 million people dies each year worldwide as a result of car accidents, resulting in the death of 30 people under 30 years of age. The problem is that technology has a long way to go to manage people safely in their daily lives. In the meantime, it could kill people with robots, if not humans.

Waymo and Tesla are at the forefront of non-driving push-ups and therefore have a front-wheel drive on these issues. All of them have the same goals – to transport people without stopping in autonomous vehicles – but they work with very different methods.

Waymo, which shares parent company with Google, is slowly rolling its own self-driving cars as a robo-taxi service. The company boasted that it traveled independently for more than 20 million miles and never died. But in the meantime, ordinary people can ride one of the hundreds of Waymo cars, in Phoenix Sun. Last week, the company has received permission to install a taxi (and rear-wheel drive) in the second city – San Francisco – where mountains, weather, and vehicles disrupt the operation. The company is eventually planning to set up in other cities and allow electrical engineering for car manufacturers. But Waymo does not know when this will happen because, as their CEO Tekedra Mawakana told Kara Swisher at the September 2021 Code 20 meeting, the company is “learning.”

“And I say, that’s, the technical difficulties of our generation. That’s what takes a long time, “said Mawakana.” Security takes time. “

In the meantime, people continue to die in car accidents, and 94% of fatal car accidents are caused by human error.

Tesla, on the other hand, has produced more independent products. In September, CEO of Tesla Elon Musk announced Drivers who have a good track record and who have paid for the program can apply for a permit to test their “Full Driving” technology. It also includes additional development tools than Autopilot, an existing Tesla version that is more autonomous, which enables drivers to drive, break, and accelerate within lanes. The company claims that the hardware – but not the software, which is still being tested – in the new Teslas can be “self-contained on all fronts” and “designed to be able to travel long distances and without the intervention of a person sitting in the driver’s seat.” Leadership of National Highway Traffic Safety (NHTSA), currently no fully operated or self-driving cars can be sold, and such expertise has been around for years.

Director of the National Transportation Safety Board they say that Tesla needs to address existing weaknesses before releasing new technology. Meanwhile, some Tesla critics say names like “Autopilot” and “Full Self-Driving” cause people to put trust more technology than it should, removing their hands from the wheel or listening intently.

This misunderstanding has led to disaster. In August, the NHTSA opened a valid audit on Autopilot following Teslas accidents and emergency vehicles (12 so far). The commission has also opened a special investigation into the alleged accident that took place while a driver’s license was being developed and that 12 people have been killed.

Musk stressed that, despite his death, these vehicles are 10 safe times than ordinary cars.

“Even if you, as a result of the conflict, reduce the number of victims by 90% and become independent, the 10% who die of independence continue to sue you,” Musk told Swisher in Code. “90 per cent of people who are alive don’t know that’s why they are alive.”

There is a truth to it. By removing people from the equation, autonomous vehicles can save lives and reduce untold economic and economic damage. As NHTSA set it up, “Successful vehicles that can see more and do things faster than human drivers can reduce errors, accidental damage, and damage.”

The key is to come up with something out of the ordinary, out of the ordinary, and bring to nothing what you want.

The two roads ran

If the goal is to get driving support for people, Tesla is close. If the goal is to have cars that drive well, Waymo wins.

“Tesla is traveling long distances or nearby planes, and Waymo is arriving on the moon,” Mike Ramsey, vice president of research firm Gartner, told Recode. “One is trying to achieve something more complex than the other. But that does not mean that long trips cannot go on. ”

In other words, even Tesla may not be able to offer a self-driving car anytime soon – even the wrong name – can find good and good features that can lead to better driving.

Tesla’s cars are rated second only to the technical expertise of SAE International as a whole. This means that Tesla’s system is needed regular monitoring of drivers, even assistive devices in the operation of the brakes. Waymo cars are part 4, which means the car can drive itself in a limited space and does not need to be supervised by drivers. However, the technology that empowers them is not designed to sell markets outside of its testing environment.

Waymo’s weapons are much stronger than Tesla’s. It uses a number of sensor tools, including locks, radars, and cameras, to create a precise picture of its location. The company map areas soon with human drivers driving by. Currently, Tesla cars rely only on cameras and production sensors.

“When you have a lot of sensors, it adds to the system’s complexity, and also makes it safer,” Ramsey said.

Cameras are not accurate when traveling a distance like lidar or radar, and their ability to position themselves can be compromised by everyday hazards such as hail, dust, or darkness. However, cameras are very cheap, and this is a must when it comes to getting the technology into the hands of consumers.

You can buy the refurbished Model 3 Tesla for $ 75,000. However, experts do not think that Tesla cars could be independent of their latest weapons, and will need to incorporate some technology like lidar to get there. We do not know the exact cost of Waymo vehicles – namely Chrysler Pacificas and Jaguar I-Paces with Waymo sensors and driving skills – but the company’s former chief executive he said earlier “it cost no more than a luxury Mercedes S-Class,” valued at about $ 180,000. Waymo says his costs have dropped dramatically it’s a recent generation.

But by selling its cars to the general public, Tesla is able to gather more real-time automotive information that can help overcome the challenges of driving. Raj Rajkumar, a professor of electronics and computers at Carnegie Mellon University and an independent automotive pioneer, calls Tesla’s collection a “lucrative opportunity” but warns that “it’s part of the answer, but not the whole answer.” However, he thinks Waymo should be able to pick up more from regular drivers at all times.

“We have to drive them whenever they can, and if they don’t, people drive them themselves,” Rajkumar said. “And for a while we get the experience. We understand what works, what doesn’t work, and we re-evaluate.”

The arrival of Tesla also means getting rid of a self-driving car, once it makes one, it will be easier.

“Tesla’s approach is exciting because, if it works, it can be very dangerous. It could start faster in other cities than its competitors could,” said Tasha Keeney, a researcher at Ark Invest, which has a majority stake in Tesla. Keeney said speeding up self-driving cars helps drive better in the future, but it won’t be free.

“Are computers better than humans? I think yes, ”he said. “Will there be mistakes along the way? Yes. ”

The result is autonomous vehicles?

Experts estimate that we may have three or four commercial vehicles in the next 10 years. But in the meantime, it’s important not to overlook the good that the search for autonomous vehicles has already taken place. Cars have recently taken a more serious approach, namely, on the road – where the roads are well known and the rules are clear – but people can take over the city streets.

Currently several driver-friendly tools are available for regular driving. Sudden change, a technology that slows down or stops a car before hitting an object, has been shown reduces injury and death and will be the same for most cars sold in the US next year. Users can expect some of these features to come out in search of autonomous vehicles over the next few years.

“We should all stop thinking that something magical will happen and that all of a sudden cars will run on their own,” said Rajkumar. Instead, this change will occur by form, after repeated testing and modification. “This last change will be a much bigger one so you won’t realize it has happened in the last five to 10 years.”

As cars become more self-sufficient, there are more benefits than good driving. Keeney said autonomous technology can also significantly reduce travel costs because taxis can compete with drivers. “It will give more people a cheap opportunity to move to the next level, which can change our lives and the way we live.”

In the meantime, perhaps the best way to manage self-employment is by no means an option. We’ll see a number of changes from a number of automotive companies as they incorporate more and more driver support systems. And while in the near future the picture may not be the driving force we were promised, it will be better than anything.

“We must not forget the benefits that technology brings,” said Rajkumar. It takes time, but eventually we will arrive. ”
