Apple Inc. it said it kept an error in the Messaging program on all its major weapons which security investigators say was tortured by the NSO Group in Israel.

The offense, reported Monday by the Citizen Lab, allowed hackers to use the NSO Pegasus malware program to use a Saudi freedom fighter’s weapon, according to security investigators. Apple said the error can be used if an unauthorized device user receives a “conspiracy” PDF file.

The malware program did not require victims to participate in the file. Receipt is sufficient to supply their equipment, according to a report by the Citizen Lab, an online research study at the University of Toronto.

“Apple is aware of the report that the case may have been misused,” the iPhone manufacturer said on its page.

Apple runs the virus on iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch via iOS 14.8, iPadOS 14.8, MacOS 11.6 and watchOS 7.6.2 software updates. The release of these apps came on the same day as Apple’s last September 14th, which could promote the release of iOS 15, Apple’s next big app that will have some security.

“The NSO will continue to provide leadership and law enforcement agencies around the world with life-saving technologies to combat terrorism and crime,” the company said in a statement.

The NSO has been repeatedly criticized by the Citizen Lab and other organizations after investigating its spy programs on the phones of freedom fighters and anti-dictatorial journalists. The NSO has insisted that spyware programs are designed to be used in the fight against terrorism and crime, not to support human rights abuses.
