The test was announced and officials from the US, South Korea and Japan are meeting to discuss how to start a fraud deal.
North Korea says it conducted a series of long-range weapons tests over the weekend, as the country continues to expand its military capabilities between nuclear talks with the United States.
Korea Central News Agency reported on Monday that the submarines, which have been under construction for two years, managed to hit 1,500 km (930 miles) on weekends.
The North has hailed its new weapons as the “most important weapon” that meets the call for leader Kim Jong Un to strengthen the country’s military. The South Korean military did not immediately confirm North Korea’s attempt.
Pyongyang’s final test took place in March when it launched a small-scale weapon. It also conducted a naval test just hours after US President Joe Biden took office in late January.
Recent tests show the continuation of the country’s arms program since the US negotiations to eliminate nuclear weapons and North American weapons that were suspended in 2019.
Rodong Sinmun, the ruling newspaper of the Workers’ Party, fired images of a new space shuttle and was removed from the erector-launcher.
The circle is a clever weapon developed over the past two years and is a key component of the five-year plan announced in January to advance science and weapons development, KCNA said.
“Detailed testing of missile launchers, several engine tests, various pilot tests, pilot and steering tests, military force tests and many more were conducted successfully,” it said.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un does not appear to have taken part in the test, while KCNA said Pak Jong Chon, a member of the Workers’ Party’s powerful politburo and secretary of its executive committee, is overseeing the process.
The announcement comes just days before negotiators from the United States, South Korea and Japan will meet in Tokyo to discuss solutions to North Korea.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi is due to visit Seoul on Tuesday for talks with his counterpart, Chung Eui-yong.
Biden officials say it is open to negotiations to achieve North Korea’s task, but has not shown any interest in overcoming sanctions.
