Zamfara State Police say rescue operations are continuing to release 73 students arrested at a school in Kaya village.
Nigerian police say the robbers have arrested more than 70 students in the northwest of the country, beating the militants recently in a student uprising.
Zamfara State Police spokesman Mohammed Shehu said in a statement that a large group of protesters stormed Government Day Secondary School in the remote village of Kaya on Wednesday morning, abducting 73 students.
“The arrests followed the disclosure of the school by several robbers,” he added.
Shehu said police rescue teams were working with the military to try to free the students.
Terrorist groups known as “terrorists” have spread fear among the locals for years, but security forces have been working hard to stem the tide of increasing violence.
More than 1,000 students have been detained in schools in northern Nigeria since December.
The gunmen demanded that their parents pay a large ransom, and when many of the students were released, some died or were executed in exile.
Recent developments have taken place when several state governments in central and northern Nigeria – including Zamfara – enacted a number of laws residents in an attempt to stem the tide of burglary and other crimes.
