In September 2020, I met a tweet from Felicia Pride about her first show, a love drama called True Love. At the time, I knew Pride because of his short video Love about two women who get up early in the morning after going to bed at night. What stood me in the grip of an infrequent TV show, was the image of the episode. Coffee Player Siriboe (The Sugar Queen, Girls Journey. Love is. He immediately beat me.
Pride wrote, “So proud True Love is featured on special AFI Fest programs. Making movies doesn’t mean fainting. And this child was willing to teach us all things and condemn us as the firstborn. I am grateful that I have learned endurance and courage in the work that is far greater than you. “
Commenting on the video, he continued, “We started talking about a beautiful, difficult love story on the window and we stuck to that goal. Even if people told us years ago that there was no audience. Faith, faith, and great faith. Good luck to EVERYONE from our guide. [Angel Kristi Williams] who felt the heart of the place and ran with it. For our manufacturers who put all the same colors. To our loved ones who kindly brought these. And our staff is very good at pouring their hearts out in this film. Except appreciation. #ReallyLove #blacklove. “With this, I bought my ticket right away.
Siriboe is known as Isaiah, a troubled artist who is trying to find his place of art, who meets an intriguing Stevie (Wong-Loi-Sing), a law student, on the show. A happy start is temporary, but disaster is approaching to reunite them in such an unexpected way that their first love begins. When both parties get involved in important matters in their careers, they must decide whether their love is temporary or permanent.
I spoke with Pride and Williams in a loving conversation, in his presence True Love“Netflix at the beginning of August 25, to discuss the action of the film on the subject of black love, friendly music should be visible, star actors, the audience should take and – (warning!) – answer the burning question, about the future of Stevie’s relationship with Isaiah.
POPSUGAR: It is said that this video was ten years in production and it’s you and Angel’s first video. Give us information on what’s going on from start to finish.
Felicia’s Pride: Yes, I have always worked in the film and when I moved to LA six years ago, it was probably for the film’s sale and production. As a result, it was almost like a trip to LA that I met Angel. We met at a cookout and he wants to improve [but particularly] love drama. I was like ‘I have a love drama’ and we started fast working together, making the play more of an Angel’s thoughts on the subject.
PS: What story do you want to tell?
Angel Kristi Williams: As soon as I read Felicia’s article, the thing that impressed me was the story of the people who are suffering in DC. I was impressed by the way they talked and I felt like I knew them. As I have friends like them, so I just thought it was a beautiful picture of all the black people in DC and how their community looks. We just want to draw where we come from and where we’ve all been living and feel like we don’t have a great show of places.
[Editor’s note: For clarity, Felicia is from Baltimore County and Angel is from Baltimore. Felicia expressed, “You have to be very specific in the DMV.”]
FP: Plus, I think we just want to tell the real love story. Relationships can be difficult, especially when you or both of you have dreams and goals and the world is struggling with those dreams and goals, which is why I think we just want to be honest.
PS: When I watched it at AFI Fest, the site reminded me of Beale St Can Talk. Also, the movie felt like “Modern Love Jones” Was this intentional?
AKW: I mean, you know, Love Jones was just a very clear interpretation and an inspiration. I remember seeing the movie, watching it on VHS before I fell in love and I just remember feeling like ‘wow I want to love each other like this or I want someone to look at me like that’ has always been about me. Just growing up and feeling like I was getting closer to the movie was an opportunity to make history for our generation like that.
FP: I also looked at VHS in college and [there were] two things that always touch me – music – so you can talk about music, I know it was the most important thing to us. We wanted to try to bring back this kind of music and romantic watches. I remember that love affair in Love Jones [featuring Maxwell’s “Sumthin’ Sumthin’ (Mellosmoothe)”] and I looked at it over and over again because it was dating. It just feels like we haven’t seen much in our love stories and in our games, which is why we want to have such love and sex.
AKW: That’s a big question. I love music. I listen to music all day. While Felicia and I were working on the show, I just started making a playlist to encourage me at this point. I just keep making a list. So, in telling the story, making them every list was close – I always thought of ‘you can know a lot about a person and what they feel.’ I think it’s one of those things that tells you a lot about who they are and where they come from. It’s one of the things I want to give actors who just search to understand their characters and what they had.
PS: Let’s join the group! Aside from Kofi and Yootha, we have Blair Underwood, Uzo Aduba, Suzzanne Douglas, Michael Ealy, Mack Wilds, Jade Eshete, Naturi Naughton – do you all dream or just let them go and see what happens?
AKW: We always think and Felicia labeled the characters as ‘chocolate, purple skin.’ They were a variety of black people that we wanted to represent as Ethiopians. We always know that we want to change the way – especially black women – they show themselves in love affairs and have a black woman be romantic and have a few women who are brown and beautiful in the profession. Finding Kofi and Yootha was magical because you never know who they will be until you find out. And now I’m thinking about the movie and I can’t think of anyone like Isaiah and Stevie, honestly.
FP: To jump, we just want to show the number of black people from different backgrounds, in one area. That was definitely the goal.
AKW: First of all I want to acknowledge that the Twitter thread has been turned on. A friend wrote to me and I felt like ‘nonsense.’ But for me, I like that people talk about this because it’s just a confirmation that we need to see ourselves in different ways and what I want people to take from the film is that it reminds them of their love stories, whether they are in love or overcoming love. I just rely on it to be fresh air and it encourages them to feel something.
FP: I would say the same. People have the right to hear what they want. Look, don’t look, you know? And there is no video for everyone, but I think the idea that we can, as the Angels say, focus only on our love not just selfish love, but selfishness and love of art, love of dreams, love of family, love of community. If people could do this from the film, it would be amazing.
Black love, music, and culture clash in “Chocolate City” as this fiery drama begins. True Love is the story of black love that we have been waiting for.

PS: ‘True Love’ does a wonderful job of telling the truth about love. Finally, when Stevie saw her on the show, did Stevie and Isaiah live together or did they take her mother’s advice and admit that their love was only temporary?AKW: I really like this question. (He says this shines from ear to ear.) I mean – the funny thing is, the movie was called ‘Open Ended’ and I think Felicia as she thinks about it, really wants to tell a love story that isn’t straight, and that’s the end of it. Like, I think it can only be interpreted in a variety of ways, and my vision was that their love story goes beyond the movie. We didn’t want to tie a bow and just say ‘yes or no,’ but more than that just let them dream and you dream about what it is.
FP: And we also wanted her to hear the truth. Most relationships do not end in tragedy. There is more and more travel. There are many disadvantages and disadvantages. There is so much to come, so to speak, so we really want to feel as real as we can, like life.
