Israeli warplanes have smashed Hamas’s base in Gaza in response to firefighting balloons fired from a Palestinian stable that set fire to southern Israel, its military has said.
There have been no recent reports of airstrikes involving what, the military said earlier on Tuesday, was a weapons base and a rocket launcher by Hamas, the Gaza-based militant group.
In a statement, the Israeli military (IDF) confirmed that military planes had attacked “Hamas weapons base at Khan Younis as well as a terrorist entry point in Jabalya”.
“Hamas’ rocket launchers, which are adjacent to civilian homes and schools in Shujaiya, were also affected,” it said.
As a standoff in Egypt ended 11 days of fighting Israel-Hamas in May, groups in Gaza repeatedly sent balloons containing dangerous weapons to Israel, and dragged Israeli militants into Hamas.
Palestinians say the balloons want to force Israel to reduce sanctions on Gaza and allow aid to reach the region.
The Balloons, which were set up on Monday, set fire to Israeli farms on the Gaza border, the Israel Fire and Rescue Service said.
