Joe Biden will want to confirm Ukraine America’s commitment to “ironclad” for its rule in a White House meeting with President Volodymyr Zelensky on Wednesday, a US official said.
A meeting between the US President and Zelensky follows tensions between Washington and Kyiv that have been taking place in recent months as the US travels to Russia, Ukrainian officials are concerned that Biden’s management concerns in Moscow were too small.
He was shocked by Biden’s decision to hold a meeting with Vladimir Putin in June in Geneva and to move his alliance in July with German chancellor Angela Merkel to resolve an American dispute over the issue. Nordstream 2 pipeline supplies Russian gas to Germany.
But Biden’s chief of staff said the US president should work to end this anxiety in Kyiv about the idea of America defending Ukraine.
“I hope President Biden will articulate his commitment to security in Ukraine, its sovereignty and the interests of the Euro-Atlantic,” he said.
He dismissed any notion that relations with Ukraine had been curtailed or ignored.
He said: “Presidents Zelensky and Ukraine have received more, if not more, attention from other European countries. On a visit to the Oval Office, we had Chancellor Merkel here a few weeks ago.
“But otherwise, President Zelensky is the second European leader to hold a conference at the Oval Office.”
Kyiv’s fears that the United States wants to protect Ukraine from any atrocities in Russia could escalate into a series of extremist ideologies. Biden explains speaking on the US withdrawal from Afghanistan on Tuesday, who denied US military intervention and international reconstruction efforts.
