In the UK, Lyssn is working with three agencies, including the Trent Psychological Therapies Service, an independent hospital, which — like Ieso — is mandated by the NHS to provide medical care. Trent PTS is still testing the program. Because NLP was banned in the US, the hospital had to work with Lyssn to identify British territory.
Dean Repper, medical director at Trent PTS, believes the program can help providers pursue better practices. “You would think that therapists who have been doing this for years have achieved good results,” he says. “But they don’t, really.” Repper compares driving a car: “When you learn to drive a car, you learn to do a lot of safe things,” he says. “But in time you will stop doing some of those safe things and you may end up paying a hefty fine.”
Change, not change
The purpose of AI is to direct human care, not instead. Lack of appropriate medical care cannot be eliminated by temporary maintenance. Dealing with the problem will also need to reduce stigma, increase funding, and improve education. Blackwell, in particular, opposes many claims made for AI. “There is a terrible deception,” he said.

One problem with making psychotherapy more evidence-based, is that it means asking clients and clients to open up their confidential discussions. Can medical professionals argue that their work is monitored in this way?
Repper is expecting some doubts. He said: “This technology is a challenge for physicians. Freer agrees. At Ieso, the facilitators discuss the solutions made by AI with their supervisors. The idea is to allow therapists to monitor their professional development, to show them what they do best – things that other therapists can learn – and not more skillfully – things they would like to do.
Ieso and Lyssn are just beginning this process, but there is an obvious potential for learning medical information that is only revealed by data mining.
